RESUMO

Due to multifactorial aetiology, tooth surfaces of primary dentition are more prone to dental caries and follow the specific pattern of dental caries which is difficult to control. The proper knowledge of caries-susceptible areas on individual primary teeth surfaces guides the clinician to take early preventive measures to stop the progression of dental caries. This study aims to find the prevalence of caries-susceptible areas on primary teeth surfaces in preschool children and the most commonly affected primary teeth. The study design adopted was a cross-sectional study. A total number of 3720 teeth of 186 preschool children were examined for initial pinpoint caries lesions using World Health Organization (WHO) caries detection criteria. 33 caries-susceptible areas were examined on individual primary tooth surfaces of preschool children who visited the Faculty of Dental Sciences. Each tooth surface was recorded separately and no radiographic examination was done. Obtained data was analysed keeping the level of significance at 5%. The overall prevalence of caries-susceptible area was found significantly higher in the maxillary teeth (Maxillary teeth: 41.7% vs. Mandible teeth: 30.7%; p < 0.001) and anterior teeth (Anterior teeth: 43.7% vs. Posterior teeth: 28.4%; p < 0.001). The prevalence of caries-susceptible area on primary teeth on the right side when compared to left counterparts was similar (Right side-38.6% and left side-38.4%; p = 0.931). Area 2 was the most prevalent area on primary teeth surfaces and primary canine was more prevalent in caries-susceptible areas.

RESUMO

Any congenital muscular disorder can cause severe dental and craniofacial deformity. The clinicians must understand the aetiology of this muscular disorder to plan the treatment for this condition. Currently, there is limited data available in the literature on the dental manifestation of nemaline myopathy. Nemaline myopathy is a type of rare congenital muscular disorder characterized by severe dental and craniofacial deformity. This case report describes the dental and craniofacial manifestations of such diseases in an eight-year-old child who visited the unit of pediatric and preventive dentistry with a chief complaint of irregular placement of teeth and inability to close the mouth.

RESUMO

The congenital absence of teeth is the most common dental anomaly affecting 2.2% to 10% of the population. It could be present in the form of anodontia, hypodontia, or oligodontia, excluding wisdom teeth. Oligodontia is most commonly associated with several syndromes like ectodermal dysplasia, Down syndrome, and Van der Woude syndrome that involve the mutation of the MSX-1 and PAX-1 genes. Few cases have been reported in the literature on how oligodontia affects primary dentition. In this case report, a total of 17 primary teeth were missing. This case report investigates whether the features of non-syndromic oligodontia are present in the primary dentition in a two-year-old boy.

AIM: This study set out to compare the damage done to dentin by three distinct titanium file brands - the Hyflex EDM, the ProTaper Next, and the Waveone Gold Nickel - in order to draw conclusions about which one is the most effective. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-first premolars in the mandible with straight canals and single roots were instrumented using Hyflex EDM, Waveone Gold, and Protaper Next. Dentinal flaws after endodontic treatment were studied by sectioning specimens using a hard tissue microtome and analyzing them under a stereomicroscope. RESULTS: There was no discernible variation between the groups in the coronal third (p=0.312) or apical third (p=0.076). Hyflex EDM and Protaper Next differed significantly in the middle portion of the tape (p=0.016). The Hyflex EDM sample had the fewest cracks. There was no statistically significant difference between Hyflex EDM and Waveone Gold; however, Hyflex EDM had fewer fractures in the middle third of the sample than Waveone Gold did. CONCLUSION: Electric discharge machining (EDM) files made from Hyflex proved to be far superior to their Protaper Next and Waveone Gold counterparts as they induced the fewest cracks in the middle third of the root dentin.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate and compare the establishment of dentinal cracks during root canal preparation using a stereomicroscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty removed human mandibular premolars were separated into three groups of 20: two experimental and one control. Within the randomized controlled experimental groups, root canals were constructed. Group I: the Waldent walflex file and Group II: the Trunatomy (TRN) file. Group III: the control group received no preparations. The surfaces of the roots were checked for dentinal cracks using a stereomicroscope and SEM following sectioning at 3, 6, and 9 mm from the apex. The Chi-square test was used to examine the data. RESULTS: ​​​​​​ In the control group, no fissures appeared. Cracks in Waldent Walflex were almost 66.7% between the 3mm and 6mm range. At both the 6 mm and 9 mm levels, there was no statistically significant difference between the experimental groups (P > 0.05). Defects were found to be substantially higher in the apical region of samples than in the median and coronal sections. CONCLUSION: Dentinal fissures were created by every rotary file used in the tests. There were more flaws in the Waldent Walflex file group than in the Trunatomy file group.

RESUMO

Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS) is an autosomal dominant syndrome with a prevalence estimated at 1:50000 to 1:100000 in newborns. It is mainly characterized by ocular, craniofacial, and dental abnormalities. From the pediatric dentist's point of view, early diagnosis of the syndrome from the ocular, craniofacial, and dental manifestation can prevent further abnormalities and ocular complications such as glaucoma. This case report presents a brief description of ARS with the characteristics of craniofacial and dental findings.

BACKGROUND: The beneficial effects of irrigants during endodontic treatment are well known; however, it may have some deleterious effects on the internal root canal wall, thereby altering its physical properties. AIM: The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of 95% ethanol on morphological characteristics of primary root dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biomechanical preparation was done in twenty extracted single-rooted primary anterior teeth using Rotary ProTaper Universal System. Samples were divided into two groups based on the final irrigation protocol: nonalcohol group (NAG) and alcohol group (AG). 3% sodium hypochlorite and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid were used for irrigation in both the groups, whereas 95% ethanol was used as a final irrigant in AG. After the treatment, these teeth were longitudinally sectioned and studied under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). RESULTS: SEM observation of NAG showed scattered debris with unaffected morphology of dentinal tubules (DT). In AG, DT showed severe erosion with the loss of peritubular and intertubular dentin. CONCLUSION: A final rinse with 95% ethanol can change the morphology of the internal root surface and aid in smear layer removal in primary teeth.

AIM: Physical properties of obturating materials have a direct effect on the quality of obturation; less viscous material will tend to extrude beyond the apex. We hypothesize that the use of absorbable gelatin sponge (AGS) can prevent the extrusion of these materials. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of obturation in root canals filled with iodoform-calcium hydroxide (Metapex) premixed paste and Metapex with AGS (MAGS) in primary molars. METHODS: This in vivo study comprised 60 primary mandibular molars which after instrumentation were divided into 2 groups according to the obturation material used, Metapex and MAGS, followed by radiographic evaluation to assess the quality of the obturation. The χ2 -test was applied for statistical analysis. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference between Metapex and MAGS groups in achieving optimum obturation (P < .001). Metapex and MAGS exhibited 86.65% and 38.88% optimum obturation respectively. The overfilling of root canals effectively reduced from 38.88% to 4.44%. CONCLUSION: The addition of AGS to Metapex causes a "tamponade effect", which reduces the tendency of Metapex to extrude beyond the root apex. Root canal obturation using a modified filling paste like MAGS is effective in obtaining optimum obturation in primary teeth.

RESUMO

West syndrome is a severe form of epilepsy syndrome which is characterized by a triad of infantile spasms, characteristic EEG findings (Hypsarrhythmia) and developmental delay. Minimal literature is available on dental findings of West syndrome. This case report presents an eight year old male child with cryptogenic form of West syndrome having a history of multiple clusters of infantile spasms. Orodental manifestations of west syndrome have been described and its dental management has been discussed in this report. (AU)


A síndrome de West é uma forma severa da síndrome de epilepsia que é caracterizada pela tríade de espasmos infantil, achados EEG (hipsarritimia) e atraso no desenvolvimento. A literatura disponível é escassa a respeito dos achados dentais e manejo da síndrome de West. Este caso relata uma criança de 8 anos de idade, masculino com a forma criptogênica da síndrome de West com história de múltiplos episódios de espasmos infantis e achados dentais típicos. O tratamento odontológico do caso é discutido e mediadas preventivas e tratamento da síndrome de West é descrito. (AU)
